Trailmix.Net is a resource for families who enjoy outdoor recreation. Our vision for Trailmix.Net is to create an online community that strengthens the family by providing outdoor recreation education and knowledge sharing. Because we are an open online community care must be taken when providing personal information. When using Trailmix.Net, please keep the following in mind:
- The Trailmix.Net forums are public spaces. Don't post anything you wouldn't want the world to know (e.g., your phone number, or specific whereabouts). We recommend that parents do the posting in our community. If you are under 18 and using our services, avoid posting anything that would make it easy for a stranger to find you such as where you live, go to school, or hang out every day after school. This is a good practice any time you are using the internet.
- People aren't always who they say they are. If you are under 18, avoid meeting people in person whom you do not fully know. Again, this applies to any online community or forum.
- Inappropriate content should be immediately reported. Trailmix.Net is “Rated G” and acceptable for all audiences. Posting objectionable content (as defined by the Trailmix.Net Terms of Use) will result in administrative action including profile deletion and IP address banning. If you feel someone's behavior is inappropriate, use the “Report Abuse” button in the footer of each page to bring Trailmix.Net administrative attention to the content.. If you are under 18, you should always talk with a trusted adult.
The following is a set of resources that you can use to learn more about protecting your personal information online:

In a post earlier this week, I wrote about the encroachment of electronic media on the lives of children. While modern gadgetry has brought enormous comfort to us all, the unintended consequences on children’s health, education, and overall well being are not well understood. At Trailmix.Net, we see outdoor recreation as a preventative countermeasure to the stresses of the information age for both children and adults.
Trailmix.Net, although a gadget itself, is dedicated to helping families set goals and enjoy the outdoors. Here are two more reasons to join Trailmix.Net:
Inspiration
One thing that I have noticed over the years is that the more connected I am with friends and other families who participate in outdoor recreation; the more likely I am to set recreational goals. Watching other people with jogging strollers, bike trailers, or baby-packs inspires me to take up my own pack.
While I know that exercise is a healthy thing to do, my children love it, and good things almost always come from family outdoor recreation, without that inspiration Lazy Mike takes over and the activation energy is missing.
The blogs, albums, and discussion forums in Trailmix.Net are specifically designed to provide that activation energy and inspiration. By reading what others have done, it is our hope that you will be inspired. By writing down what you have accomplished, it is our hope that you will inspire others.
Education
Education is one of the biggest barriers to participation in outdoor recreation. Some people think that it is money, but I disagree. The more exotic recreational activities like climbing or kayaking are expensive, but hiking only requires shoes and a lunch.
Many people just don’t know what is available on public lands. I say this with much humility because even after ten years of living in California and actively seeking outdoor recreational opportunities I am constantly learning what is available. Trailmix.Net has two features that kick in here. First, we have a fast and powerful search engine to scour forum and blog posts. Enter a trail, region, or topic to see what others have said about it. Second, we have highly configurable RSS tools that you can use to be automatically notified when a topic of interest is updated.
In addition to forums and blogs, some of the content that we are building at Trailmix.Net that we are most proud of involves educational seminars that address how to safely engage in an outdoor activity, how to use a product, or what to do if something goes wrong. These seminars will be developed and delivered by experts in outdoor recreation.
In doing these things, we hope to provide inspiration and break the education barrier to outdoor recreation.

As I write this post, the first post to the Trailmix.Net Site Announcement blog, a number of exciting things are happening with Trailmix.Net. Our logo artwork is complete. Yesterday I had a conference call with our development team to talk about the new site layout. Today I initiated some conversations with Subject Matter Experts who may be involved in creating our first online seminars. The seeds of Trailmix.Net are planted and as I anxiously wait for them to grow I am overwhelmed with a sense of excitement about what this site will be.
It seems appropriate that the first Site blog post addresses why a family would join Trailmix.Net. Even in its current “under construction” state Trailmix.Net can support member blogging, photo albums, and discussion topics in our forum.
On their own, these are just tools. The magic of Trailmix.Net is how these tools are applied. Trailmix.Net exists to help families enjoy the outdoors and one of the best ways to do this is to collaborate with others. Setting a goal is fun. Setting a goal, sharing the challenge, cheering others on, learning, and teaching in a community of likeminded friends takes that fun to another level.
There are a number of specific reasons why one would want to join Trailmix.Net, but one of the most obvious is the encroachment of the electronic world on our children. We’re not luddites here, believing that electronics and technical advancement must be opposed, but the world has changed quickly over the last ten years and those changes have had unintended consequences. One such consequence is that our children spend more time indoors than outdoors.
According to the Outdoor Industry Foundation:
· The average child spends 35 hours a week in front of the television.
· Currently, less than 25% of school-aged children participate in daily physical activity.
· Reduction in physical fitness is the largest culprit behind a 10% increase in childhood obesity.
A recent childhood obesity report shocked Canadians when they learned that one in four children is overweight. A similar finding was reported in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control in 2004:
…the percent of children who are overweight (defined as BMI-for-age at or above the 95th percentile of the CDC Growth Charts) continues to increase. Among children and teens ages 6-19, 16 percent (over 9 million) are overweight according to the 1999-2002 data, or triple what the proportion was in 1980.
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/04facts/obesity.htm
Now, full discosure is required here: I am not exactly as trim as I should be and spending more time with my children on the trail would be a great improvement. But that is what this site is about.... Setting healthy goals and enjoying the outdoors as a family.
